Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a potentially life- changing complication of diabetes mellitus. Signs and symptoms may include vomiting, abdominal pain, deep heaving breathing, increased urination, weakness, confusion and sometimes loss of knowledge. A person's breath may develop a specific" fruity" smell. Onset of symptoms is generally rapid-fire. People without a former opinion of diabetes may develop DKA as the first egregious symptom.
